What is a Provangelist?

by zcobb on July 27, 2010

Good question! A provangelist is a professional evangelist, an emerging role in commerce and other areas of human endeavor. The organizational role of the professional evangelist is relatively new so it is still being defined. So here is a definition I am working on:

A professional evangelist or provangelist is someone employed to spread, with fervor and enthusiasm, the news about an idea, cause, product, event, or anything else considered worthy of greater attention.

One thing already clear is that provangelist is not another word for salesperson. While the work of a provangelist may lead to increased sales–or revenue or market share–the provangelist does not engage in sales transactions.

Indeed, the provangelist role is a blend of several different, more traditional roles, such as thought leader, subject matter expert, spokesperson, and advocate. Provangelists need strong communication skills and good inter-personal skills. They also need a good moral compass. Although the role of professional evangelist is not religious, it does require that the individual has a firm belief in the positive social benefits of whatever he or she is evangelizing.

As we move forward we will have many occasions to refine the definition of professional evangelist.

Hello world! Welcome to provangelist.com, the home of professional evangelism on the web. The term “provangelist” was coined by me, Stephen Cobb, to describe the unique business function performed by a professional evangelist.

A professional evangelist is someone employed to spread, with fervor and enthusiasm, the news about an idea, cause, product, event, or anything else worthy of greater attention.

Over the years I have learned a lot about how to evangelize effectively. In the past ten years I evangelized many things:

  • better computer security in general
  • specific approaches to securing computer
  • the importance of stopping unsolicited email or spam
  • new technologies for reducing spam
  • the benefits of better access to broadband in rural areas
  • awareness of hereditary hemochromatosis
  • e-commerce personalization technology

I enjoy sharing what I have learned as a professional evangelist and in these pages I will be describing the role of professional evangelist in more detail and providing resources and advice for people who are, or are interested in becoming, professional evangelists.

(Note: I provide professional evangelism training and consulting products and services under the trademark Provangelismâ„¢)
